Retired Canvasback Duck Decoy owned by Ralph Turner of Onancock, Virginia. He was a professional hunter on the Virginia Eastern Shore and retired before the law took close interest in him. The shotgun is Wilm Heym 12 ga. and the Chart is Tangier Sound
The Canvasback is a Delaware River style that was popular through the Chesapeake Bay and North Carolina Sounds that are typically made of old telephone poles. These decoys were typically group projects where many people came together to produce great quantities with each person doing one specific task. Most bodies were exactly the same with this example being a high back. Different species of birds would include diifferent heads and paint schemes. Used rifle bullets would be used to make the eyes, dipping the end into paint and stamping the head transferring the eye pattern. The painting would be painting one color after another not waiting to dry. The Decoys would be left out on frosty nights to dull the paint and glossy colors.
